Lately, I’ve been taking massive action in my business as well as in my personal life. I’m revamping my website, creating new products and services, coaching my beloved clients, teaching a bevy of classes, and gutting part of my home, both inside and out. It’s gonna be amazing when it’s all done, but the past few days, I’ve simply run out of steam. About the only thing I feel inspired to do is to get under the covers with my favorite bag of chocolate chip cookies and binge watch my newest obsession, Damages, on Netflix.
It’s wonderfully escapist, but it’s not exactly what I’d call self-care. More importantly, wallowing around in bed isn’t coming close to motivating me to get back up again. Now, if I were coaching a client about this, the first thing I’d ask them is what they’re doing to nurture themselves. And I certainly wouldn’t take binge watching (and binge eating) as an answer. But sometimes, even life coaches need a coach to give ‘em a little kick in the ass. So I asked my favorite coach friends their top ways to get unstuck—and of course, they came though brilliantly.
I wish I could include them all here, but if I did, this newsletter would be half a mile long. Here are just a few great examples of what the smartest people I know say they do when they’re feeling stuck in the muck:
- I do yoga, Zumba or have a dance party
- Going to a movie or taking myself on a date
- I ditch any numbing substances and do something that genuinely nourishes me like exercise, being with friends or taking a bath
- Mediation!
- I move to a different location like Starbucks if I've been working at home. And I tell myself I only have to work on what I've been putting off for 15 minutes. Typically, more times than not, I just keep going when I see how much I get done in just 15 focused minutes
- Playing with my motley crew of furry companions
- Being in nature
- Sex (duh!)
- Gardening with my bare hands and feet
- Music!
- Going to the beach or the ocean
- Jogging, playing tennis or your favorite sport
No matter which one of these—or something altogether different—strikes your fancy, remember what I temporarily forgot: inspiration isn’t something that just happens to you, like a random rainstorm. You create it.
So tell me, what are you waiting for?
